Each year when Christmas rolls around and the yearly mix of holiday music starts pouring out of speakers at the store, in my car and at work, I find myself gravitated to one holiday theme song. Or should I say the song gravitates toward me. Just a personal "Lynette favorite" that - when I do hear it- it seems to make the clausometer go up a little bit more. In years past it's run the gammit like last years off the beaten path choice of Jo stafford's "It happened in Sun Valley" or the year before - The Christmas waltz - by the Sinatra Family. "Holly Jolly Christmas" also was a favorite in the past. But this year I went more traditional. It sorta caught me off guard - Silent Night. Maybe because our sweet baby James is here or maybe I was thinking of him when I heard it. All I know is this very old song warmed my heart each time I heard it this season. May you find your song this season and may it remind you of all the wonder...shit the fire alarm went off. I have to go save the dog. Enjoy the glow of Christmas Eve.

	Croup? Poor James is breathing hard. We went to the doctor at 7pm tonight. Got mist, and steroid shot in the leg to help ease the swelling so he can breathe. This is not a weather report. Or maybe it is. Or maybe it's just a Lynette report. Anyways, it's late and I'm up with James and it's still raining. Amazing! While the rain is coming down, let's pass the time with a few thoughts:

• I love Jason.
• I love baby James. He's 14 weeks old today. That's 3 months and 7 days. Yay!
• I saw Jean Claude today.
(guess I should explain the last bullet point)

So, a long time ago- I discovered there is a deer who lives on a small strip of land between Van Dorn street and 395. I may have mentioned it before. I call him Jean Claude...as in Jean Claude Van Dorn. Anyway, the first time i saw the deer, it was a cold wintery day. And that was a few years back. Gosh I cant remember how long ago but i do recall Jason was sure it was a part of my imagination - since then he too has seen the deer, proving I didn't make it up!

So, this deer- i keep seeing it on my way home from work. Sometimes months will go by without a sighting and then- there he is. And just when it seems i have given up hope- he appears. Almost like a good luck sign.

So, tonight- imagine my response when gasp! - there he was -Jean Claude! The last time I saw him was a little over half way through my pregnancy so I was shocked to see him standing there on the fenceline. I started doing the math. Does this mean he survived the earthquake? Yep...although I thought he might have found higher ground. The hurricane? Yes, he did. And 100+ degree heat this summer? Right again. I was so happy to see he was still around!

I wonder how many other people know he is there? You can look for him if you want...if you are on Van Dorn street between Taney and Braddock - look to the strip of land between you and 395 and if you see him, wave "hi". Ahh, The Adventures Of Jean Claude. It could be a good children's book. Here are a few storyline ideas
• Jean Claude eats a sandwich. (it's true, one day I witnessed a man throw a sandwich over the fence.)
• Jean Claude builds a raft. If it keeps raining on the east coast we'll be under water. (the rain part is true)
• Jean Claude makes s'mores. (ok, you get the idea)

I think the rain finally stopped. James is asleep. Goodnight rain. Goodnight James.

For the past few days we thought our dog was dying. I'm not kidding. Leia would go out for a walk, eat breakfast, take a nap and the out of the blue get up and start panting and pacing for no reason...the way she does when it's thunder and lightening at 3am. I remember Jason getting frustrated on Monday saying "our dog is dying!" and me - per usual- doing a google search to find out why. All this panting turns out it could be anything. Not only do dogs pant from heat but also pain. And that range of pain is huge. Everything from bone cancer to an abdominal issues. Arthritis even. Ugh. So, my plan was to take her to the vet. Jason and I both knew she wasn't doing too well, and knowing that she just turned 8 years old I was bracing myself for the worst.

WELL. She's fine now. No panting or pacing. She's acting normal! So we think she knew the earthquake was coming. In fact, when I got home yesterday she ran up to me and jumped on me 10 times over, almost like "see, I told you, I told you, I told you."

I now have a new found respect for my cottony soft friend.

Note: I had no idea Jason would also blog about this today :)

Who knew being a mom would mean hanging out at 2:32am on my laptop. I guess I thought about the night feedings for a newborn when I was pregnant, but I never imagined how strange it would be to live this nocturnal life. And how much I really don't mind being up at this hour. It's these middle of the night moments, with the TV off and the sound of the ocean on the Sleep Sheep that I ponder motherhood the most.

I just went into the bathroom. Took my ponytail out of my hair, and looked at myself in the mirror. James did a number on my body. I'm slowly returning (very slowly)to my old self. I don't mind it, I wear my extra tummy weight like a battle scar. Proud of my body for creating this little human and watching the healing process back to my pre-preg state. This Wednesday will mark 6 weeks since I gave birth, and it already seems like James has been in our lives forever.

I don't really have anything too profound to say about motherhood except this...it rocks. Having the awesome responsibility of caring for (no matter how tired you are) this little boy has been amazingly fun...even though I'm losing track of the days. It's hot out, so I don't feel too bad hanging with James all day at home. It's going to be 103 degrees today.

James has finally drifted off to sleep, I can hear little baby snores. Time to catch some ZZZZ's.

One of the great things about maternity leave, and having friends with kids...you learn about channels on the Tee Vee you didn't really pay any attention to before. Mainly, the kids channels. Today, Jason and I discovered our new favorite cartoon on Cartoon Network. It's called Adventure Time with Finn and Jake. Adventure and surreal humor. I'm in!

New episodes premiere Monday, July 11 at 8/7c on Cartoon Network. Yay!

So, I bet you are wondering...when is Lynette gonna have her baby? Good question! This week's double doctor appts went well, no sign of stress during my (his) non stress test (the delicious grape juice got him kicking up a storm) and plenty of fluid in there too. Baby C is also measuring right on (slightly on the smaller side) but I'll take it. We are good. But as of today - I feel the same. So I don't think it will be today. I also was let off the hook about inducing on my due date. They are now treating me as a "normal" person who is pregnant. So the window of when this baby is arriving just got a little bigger.

In other news, my mom is back at UCMC today to get her filter taken out. They put it in before her surgery in December to prevent blood clots. It still amazes me to think this whole time I've been pregnant she has been dealing with ovarian cancer. It has been an interesting 9 months. And to think she was just diagnosed in early April as cancer-free is a miracle. Jason and I were commenting that this is shaping up to be a great summer for my parents. They are planning like 6 vacations! I'm not kidding! They kick off their summer tour at our place - arriving just in time to meet Baby C. Who, in my opinion helped my mom heal. Baby C doesn't know that yet, but I'll tell him someday.

So the countdown continues. Stay tuned everybody!

NST #2 (two weeks & 2 days to go)

Each Tuesday in May I'm getting a NST (non-stress test) and fluid check at the hospital. Well, I should say, baby C is getting these check-ups. So far, we've passed the test two weeks in a row. Whoo Whoo. I know they are keeping an eye on me b/c of my age- and that's fine. I want the baby to be safe. Here is the printout of the NST in action. The top line is the baby's heartbeat and the bottom line (all the way to the right on the photo) is my contractions. I wasn't having any this week but I did last week. Its crazy to think sometime in the next two weeks I'm having a baby. Honestly couldn't be more excited and scared all at once. And there will be birthday cake. Jason promised me (us). My prediction is I'll go all the way to May 27th- any other predictions out there?

It was music to my ears Saturday as two of my favorite people put together an awesome Baby shower! (Thanks C and C) It was a "release" party theme (as in record release- OMG so creative and so me) complete with a "name that tune" game and some rockin' food, drinks and cake! Plus, both of our Moms traveled out to Virginia for the event. A truly special day.

No Fishing

On one of our recent trips to storage (making that second bedroom into a nursery has been so fun) Jason stumbled upon his tackle box. One of my favorite memories early in our relationship- while we were still dating- was taking Jason to Bena,MN for a full week of fishing. (something I'd been doing every year since birth.) I was filled with joy to share Bena with Jason and he took it all in like a sponge. You know that moment when you see someone come into their own. I saw Jason do that in Bena. He loved it. We were in God's country, at dawn, with our poles in the water and I still can't think of anything that tops that. The cool thing is, I know we'll be back. And we'll get to teach another generation where to find the best fishing spot.

The baby furniture place called. Our stuff has arrived! Wow. They told us 10-14 weeks and it's only going to take 5 weeks. We paid for delivery AND set up so this won't be "Jason Production"- nope...someone else will be putting the crib together for us. Although for the record, Jason could have easily assembled a crib on his own. He is very manly.
With the news of our furniture delivery, Jason taped up all the doors and windows and we have a few blue color swatches hanging... Most we don't like. We'll paint on Saturday.

Empty Room, Waiting

Seems like it took forever, but we finally cleared out our guest/office/music/book room on Sunday to make way for baby C. I keep walking in there to try to imagine what the future holds. Can't quite grasp it yet, but I'm getting excited. I want to meet this little person!

Last weekend at church we got a special take home box of goodies as part of the Love series. And considering Valentine's Day is Monday, the box included some candy- a few Hershey kisses and a box of classic Sweethearts. I popped the box of Sweethearts in my bag this morning before work as a Friday treat.
First, let me tell you. Things have changed in the Sweetheart flavor department. It's been years since I've eaten - what I remember being chalky tasteless conversation hearts - but I am here to tell you things have changed! The yellow hearts taste like lemon, the green hearts taste like green apple....whoa...so different from the I don't even remember old flavors. And not only that, the conversations themselves have evolved. I just pulled a blue heart from the box that said "text me". Do you realize how valuable this piece of candy would be to an 8th grader??? I'd would have killed for it back in junior high. Our conversation hearts were vague at best. With NO flavor.

So, I'm pretty much jealous. The new flavors, new sayings. But I'm also excited that, maybe just maybe that terribly shy girl or boy in junior high might just get their wish if they play their cards right. Text me.

Operation Birthday Re-Do

From my last post, it's safe to say my birthday didn't totally rock...sitting in a three hour traffic jam in a snowstorm wasn't my idea of fun...but Jason promised he'd make it up to me. So, last night we DID go out to eat and as you can see "Operation Birthday Re-Do" continues today. Thanks for making me this awesome cake, Jason!!! Can't wait to eat some :-)

Here are the things that didn't suck about my birthday.
1. I didn't die. That's good!
2. I had Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast.
3. Jason made arrangements to (I asked in a sweet voice- I mean, email- if he would) metro over to my work from his work to drive my pregnant birthday ass home and he did it! (yeah it took over 3 hours to complete the journey and we didn't go out to eat or have any cake or ice cream- but we got home safe- and ate pancakes - really late.)
4. Jason's Birthday Card Blog. Oh my goodness, I love that man.

Over the weekend I cleaned out my closet and created a giant mess. Let's just say I'm glad we have two bathrooms, cause I made a pile so big you couldn't get to the bathroom that's connected to our closet area. Ooops. Sorry Jason. He didn't really mind - he just walked out of our room and said to me "you got something goin' in there? Did you just pull it all out? What stage are you at?" To that I replied, "that giant pile is going to goodwill." And I saw him sigh in relief.

See, in order to clean out our second bedroom/craft room/book nook/office/music room - for our upcoming arrival...I first had to re-do my own closet in the hopes to make room for some of that stuff. I think it's gonna work. I cleared an entire shelf, which to me means progress.

In the process of moving things around in our simple two bedroom condo - I'm so glad we decided to put the desk in storage and keep the bookshelves. To me the desk was only holding books anyway and it wasn't really serving the purpose we got it for. At least not since Jason got a laptop. He sit's at the kitchen table now to read your blogs and comment on your Facebook status. He doesn't sit at a silly desk! :)

Anyway next up, save the MUSIC. I'm still trying to figure out a way to keep our Cds in house.

You know how they say "it'll change your life"? People use that phrase for a lot of things I guess. Well, I've been thinking it applies to me lately. I can't deny that I spent most of 2010 worrying. I'm not even that much of the worrying kind (unless the wiper fluid doesn't work on the windshield and we can't see out the window will driving really fast in Ohio.) But that seems minor compared to the worrying I've done this year. Like, back in April, May and June when things were questionable at work and then in September when I found out my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and then October when we were like "ok, insert awesome here" when I found out I was pregnant. We are both feeling blessed and thankful. But I really worried the first 13 weeks. And I am still worrying. It really does feel like it's all happening at once these days. And I hadn't posted in a while because I didn't want to spill the beans too soon. ;-)

So my mom went in for her major surgery on December 13th at University of Chicago Medical Center and ended up staying for 16 days. She's coming home today. the surgery was a complete hysterectomy and an outside lining of her stomach removed where they saw most of the tumors attached. Post op included some crazy setbacks, like her heart triggered by anxiety went into atrial fibrillation (A-fib)and continued to have an abnormal heart rhythm for 12 days. During that time, a blockage at the bottom of her stomach/top of intestines wouldn't allow fluid to escape her stomach so she was put on a suction tube to pump her stomach and did not eat for 11 days. Finally, on Christmas Day, they removed the tube after a CT scan found no blockage. My mom was happy to eat a cherry popsicle for Christmas dinner. And then on Sunday, Dec 26 - she could smell the lemon cake I brought for my dad from Jason's mom and asked to have a bite (even though she was still on a liquid only diet) and boom, her heart went back to a normal rhythm. Just like that. I am so happy she is on her way home today. My mom is so strong, it's amazing.

It's three days after Christmas and I feel like I missed out a little on the whole Christmas thing this year - but then again, it's times like this where we grow closest to our families. And isn't that what Christmas is about? Like poor Jason getting sick (bronchitis) before we left for Illinois- out cold for three days with a temp above 101 - I took care of him. Then I got sick from him in Illinois and he took care of me....meanwhile we both took care of my Mom visiting the hospital all day everyday we were there. It's just nice to know everyone's getting back home, and feeling a little better and enjoying real food and the cozy comforts of our own stuff.

T minus three days to post 2010 and I'm ready to start a New Year.

When I watched this video, I got pretty grossed out. Then I read the article that goes with it. I posted it below. I always thought Semi-Homemade on the Food Network was an odd show but I still watch it so I can see Sandra Lee's outfits match the curtains. I can't believe this!

The Making of the Infamous Kwanzaa Cake
Okay, I'm only going to say this once and then I'm leaving the country. Seriously, by the time this post is up, I'll be in Thailand. I think it's better for everybody.

Here's the truth. I wrote and sold the recipe for the Kwanzaa cake to Sandra Lee and, while I'm confessing my soul, yes, for Christ's sake, the Chanukah cake, too. There, I said it.

Forgive me Father.

I can honestly say Ms. Lee had nothing against African Americans or Jews. She just has incredibly bad food taste. She was not discriminating about who would be harmed from her culinary "creations." Think what your taste would be like if you came from carnival or circus people. Did I just offend Paris Hilton?

When the Angel Food Cake Collection came to life, Ms. Lee was converting to Judaism herself for her new husband and she seriously wanted to bring her new "cuisine" to an entire nation. Well, let's put it this way, she wanted to sell a shitload of books. And she did. She wanted fame and money. And she succeeded. I believe that's often thought of as the American dream by many, isn't it? Note to all American Dreamers: This may be a good time to take a look inward.

I think I hear the audible gasps. I'm wondering how long before the angry mob will be gathering on my front yard. Crap, will they bring torches? Will my neighbors call the fire department?

In my defense, I must start at the beginning. I've been developing recipes for cookbook authors and food companies for over twenty years. At least twenty of the fifty cookbooks I've ghostwritten or contributed to have ended up on the New York Times Best-Seller List. Many celebrities or TV chefs hire me because they are too busy to write their own recipes. This is not unusual.

In some cases, the "talent", as they are known in the business, have no talent. They do not know how to write a recipe or even cook, for that matter. Therefore, as a trained chef, food stylist and recipe writer, I come in handy.

I sell recipes from $100-$400 dollars apiece plus the cost of groceries. I love it. Not only is it fun, creative and challenging, I get to study all kinds of food. Most projects are just plain terrific. I'm humbled by the amazing people I've gotten to write and work for.

But (isn't there always a but?)...wait for it...wait for it.

One night in my office, at least 10 years ago, my phone rang. I answered it. If only I had noticed that my dogs started to howl and blood mysteriously started seeping from the walls. Alas, I did not. So excited to close the sale, I made an appointment with a personal assistant to meet "the next Martha Stewart, only bigger." I was happy to think about this latest project that would help feed my assistants.

It turned out that the premise of this cookbook would be "delicious desserts with nothing made from scratch." This book would be the second in a series. The first book was almost done, but apparently the writer, food stylist and recipe tester from that first book had all gone sailing in the Bermuda Triangle to celebrate and had disappeared. The books were being self-published by Ms. Lee, unless she could find a publisher, ASAP. She really, really wanted a publishing partner.

I 'm not sure if it was because my head was spinning 360 degrees and my retinas had become burned by some horrible smoke that seemed to fill the room whenever she moved, but I wasn't grasping the concept. "No fresh food. Just canned food. Nothing fresh, do you understand me? All food out of cans or boxes, so it's easy for the homemaker ...and write the brand name of the cans or boxes right in the recipe."

I assumed it was the ten years of smoking dope in my formative years that was making me stupid. Then I thought, okay, this is another slant on The Cake Mix Doctor, by Anne Byrn. A book that had been wildly successful. I can do this.

Before you say a word, let me say one more thing in my defense.

I have people that depend on me for their livelihood. Assistants, designers, photographers, and especially my American Express Platinum card. I sign the checks, so I have to bring in the money. To make my small business work, I took the job. First time I ever signed a contract. Of all the truly big stars and real celebrities I've worked with, it was always just a handshake and my reputation for getting the job done that created the deal. To put it simply, I deliver what I say I will.

Ms. Lee insisted on a contract. Her attorney at the time also sold Mexican art.

Please, I can't make this shit up.

Fuck me; of course I should have seen the writing on the wall.

Thirteen months past and after exactly 151 recipes, I tried to fake my death.

Ms. Lee called and though we were done with the book, she needed at least ten extra angel food cakes for "fun" sugary holiday times to sell to a magazine. Just a reader's note, it wasn't Gourmet, but the magazine I designed those "adorable cakes" for is still in business.

Read it and weep.

Please ask yourself, what would you have done in my place? See how that Kwanzaa cake is looking better from my perspective? I will tell you truly, the candles were her idea.

I guess I imagined something more refined. And I know the Corn Nuts were disgusting, but she didn't. As a matter of fact, the more tasteless the recipes got the more she liked them, the faster she approved them, and I could get home and drink some medium-priced wine after our meetings. She's not a good role model for abstinence.

Get it?

The last words I'll speak, before I board my plane and go to a land where nobody knows Sandra Lee, is that I had to fill the cavity of the Chanukah cake with marshmallows so it wouldn't collapse under all that frosting, and so that much-discussed pearl Star of David "crown" wouldn't topple. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I've never watched any of the videos on YouTube. My priest says, "Never call the devil."

And to think, Anthony Bourdain was afraid of her. Crap, he was never even close.

It's November and it's gorgeous outside. This type of day is one of the reasons I love living here. It feels more like mid September even though it's mid November. And it's so nice out it's like the world knows that Jason is feeling better. He is!! Whoo hoo! Last weekend was a wash so I think this one will be better. Gosh he's been sick for almost two weeks it seems. Anyway I super excited he's feeling better! Fun times Jason, welcome back!

I remember this face! But I haven't seen it since last week. Jason has been in bed since Friday and after getting worse over the weekend - went to the doctor today. He's got an upper respiratory infection and got some antibiotics and cough syrup. He can barely talk too. Ugh. We've missed out on every social function and have been eating lots of soup. Sorry again to those we missed this weekend. Fun times Jason. Get better soon :)

Big Week For My Mom

In the last two weeks I have learned more medical mumbo jumbo than I care to share but I wanted to keep my notes straight, so here I am. Writing about it. To get you up to speed - Mom was diagnosed with Stage III-IV ovarian cancer last Wednesday and the following day admitted to NIMC (Centegra in McHenry, IL) for precautionary reasons due to an abnormal chest CT scan.

As it turns out, mom has a medium sized blood clot on her right lung and a few smaller ones throughout and was immediately put on Heparin blood thinner IV to combat the clots. Between that moment and now, mom has been resting safe in the hospital and has had several tests, scans, and more done. She feels good, her vitals always come back great and has tried many of the items from the hospital menu. She's taking a liking to jello for whatever reason, and plans to make large amounts of it when she gets home. Not only that, Mom has had so many visitors sometimes I think she need a personal assistant to keep track of everything!

Over the course of the week, they took mom off the Heparin IV and switched her to a pill form of blood thinner medication called coumadin. She'll be taking this when she goes home to keep the blood from getting too thick or too thin. Plus, it's a common precautionary to prescribe coumadin when you are getting chemo b/c the port could (possibly) cause a clot. So mom's not that odd for being on this medication. Blood clots are also a side effect of the cancer, not everyone gets them...and we are glad they caught them before it got worse.

Also, since she's been in the hospital, Mom got her power port for chemo on Monday 9/20/10. The port surgery went well and it's on her right side by her collar bone, and today (9/24/09) around 11:30am Central time, started her first chemo treatment. Starting with the pre-meds and then the chemo. Dad said it looks like water...and Mom says she can't feel anything from it right now as it's going in.

Along with the many tests (the jury out on a few still) there has been some good news this week too. They have confirmed that it hasn't spread to the brain! Second, that the shady scaring on her lungs has also been confirmed that it's unrelated. And third, that her blood thinner medication seems to be working (with her off the IV). Good news and good vibes as we finish off the first week and start a new one. Keep Mom in your thoughts and prayers.

The plan is for Mom to go home from the hospital tomorrow (Saturday) and Jan and Hub are visiting on Sunday for dinner. As I finish up this post, Mom is in the home stretch of her first chemo treatment, each session is about 4 hours long.

Well, the news has hit my family hard about my mom being diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. With no tests available to detect Ovarian Cancer and my mom barely having any symptoms to boot, she started feeling like crap in mid July....August was test after test...and September 15th she was diagnosed. (That's the shortest version ever.)

The turbulance of this news has really kicked us all in the butt, however, we are strong! My mom is driven and my Dad - well let's just say if we're picking teams - you want my Dad on your team. No questions asked. Please visit our Family Blog to keep up with news related to our Mom. Not much at this blog yet, as it was just started a few days ago. Just to recap though - Mom's currently in the hospital on blood thinner medication because they found one medium and a few smaller blood clots in her lungs and she is being monitored while on blood thinner medication and getting other stuff done. She received her power port for chemo on Monday and is scheduled to start chemo on Friday of this week. She is in good spirits, eating well and has been "booked" solid with visitors since she went into the hospital last Thursday. Mom's popular.

And we've talked a lot. And Skyped. How awesome to be sitting there (me on the hospital tray table via the laptop during visiting hours.) Thanks to my dad for setting this up!

So for Mother's Day earlier this year, I got Mom a subscription to Martha Stewart's Living magazine and she said she just loves getting the mag. My mom, I should tell you....is a decorating genius. She's got the eye as they say. She'd be neck and neck in a Martha showdown if there ever was one. So when I told her that Martha had just taken over the Hallmark Channel as her own with tons of new shows...my Mom was thrilled! She's totally into it.

"Oooo I love watching her show" my mom said as her voice lit up! I said, "well...now there will be many shows all day similar to the Martha Stewart Living radio channel."

We laughed and she said she can't wait to check it out.

Jason swears that if we lived anywhere near Orlando, FL that we would have attended the Star Wars Celebration 5 Lucas convention over the weekend. Thankfully, Sirius XM covered the event and actually did a really good job. Every time I tuned in I was facinated about the voice over actors, panels featuring various actors from the films and other reunions and interviews. But it's radio...and you miss out on the costumes and all the visual stuff. It was an inspiring weekend actually - after teasing Jason that I was going to make him a birthday cake that looked like the Death Star - seriously wouldn't that rock? He decided to purchase the Starwars Trilogy. So we heard the Awesome Jon Stewart/George Lucas Main Event interview (find it on You Tube in 8 parts) and went back to the movies to realize they are just as good as the last time we watched them (which was when we still used a VCR.) Anyway - back to the Sirius XM channel that covered the event - I'm here to fill you in on what you heard but couldn't see...how 'bout some Hoth Hothies.

About 4 1/2 years ago Jason and I both quit smoking. Our journey has been nearly the same up until this point (although he quit one week before me and didn't eat NEARLY as many jellybeans as I did in the process.) That seems like forever ago - but it was the beginning of something new for both of us. We reconnected on new levels and joined a gym shortly after we quit smoking and like a light switch "click" we were off on a new path - a healthier one - and I'm happy to report that neither of us have gone back after quitting cold turkey. (Yay us!) I hardly remember it now, but I struggled for a while with not having that social outlet at work, or stress reliever to turn to. I'll even wager that since we both quit smoking, Jason and I have encountered epic sized stressful situations that would be instant triggers, but we somehow held our ground. And I should have own stock in Trident gum. I chewed so much of that stuff. It was the bubblegum flavor - and I can't stand the taste now. Like cigarettes, I'll never buy Trident again.

It's kind of amazing when you feel strongly enough about something in your heart- what you'll do to see it through. Jason and I made the decision to quit smoking and stuck to it. Pretty amazing stuff - I amazed myself to be honest. Since then, I wouldn't say I'm super extreme when it comes to all the things I believe in or in my quest to be a healthier person - but rather that's all my heart knows to do now.

In fact, I've been relying on my heart a lot lately. Not so good when you're navigating rough waters at work, but rewarding when an opportunity dear to my heart - like supporting local farmers - comes around. (We now own a CSA 'Community Supported Agriculture' share of organic crops - something I have researched at length since I quit smoking! see pic) Or -like, when it comes to my career, my work ethic surprises me sometimes- because that's how my heart works. And when I married Jason, I knew without doubt he'd be my one and only forever. Cause my heart knew. Sometimes you just know things. (Come on- you know what I'm talking about!) And through all of this, Jason and I have walked in step with the positive and healthy changes in our lives. Giving us strength to endure lifes challenges along the way. More recently, for example, as if Jason and I were both tapped on the shoulder at the same time - we both - and I'm not kidding - it happened seperatly in both of us within a month - decided we should look for strength through God. Life has an intersting way of moving you forward. And 2010 has taken us on yet another journey together, and I think we're both better people for it. I can feel it in my heart.

Mercury in Retrograde begins August 20th

Ok, so Mercury isn't in retrograde just yet... but if you even halfway believe Susan Miller and her guide to astrology...you know when Mercury is in retrograde it's a time of reflection and going back to repair things, clean out closets...old relationships, stories and ideas pop up out of nowhere...that sort of thing.

When Mercury is in retrograde, it is also suggested you avoid signing important papers (like closing on a house) or buy electronic equipment (like a new TV) -for fear of getting a lemon - or something of that nature. My friend Ross is always asking when Mercury will be in retrograde so he can plan his next electronics purchase. In fact, if he's having a particular bad day he will go out of his way to check the status of Mercury with me. It's pretty amusing. So Mercury will be in retrograde from August 20-September 12, 2010 Please don't buy a laptop at this time. Or er...whatevs...I'm not even sure if this stuff is truly real.

So, in related retrograde news...this falling in the old relationship category...I just discovered this article in Spinner magazine where Morrissey revealed his Top 13 albums of all time. On this list –the no-brainers like the Ramones and Velvet Underground – and then - as odd as it may seem – coming in at #11 on the list - Morrissey (who ranks very high when it comes to singers I love) picked an album that I sang backing vocals on. I don't usually mention old flames on my blog or in conversation, I've truly moved on in my life - but back in the mid nineties I dated the lead singer of the punk rock crooning band the Smoking Popes and I sang backing vocals on one song on their 1995 album Born To Quit on Capitol records.

Safe to say it was a long long time ago, and I’m fuzzy on the details when it comes to our relationship’s demise. I’m pretty sure, not long after this album was released, he broke my heart and went on a nationwide tour with Green Day. A story with true street cred among the indie rock kids I guess.

I haven’t thought about this memory in so long – so it was pretty funny to see the list Morrissey made, and to find I contributed to it.

True, I sang on that album back in 1995 - but that seems like lifetime ago. However, it's pretty cool Morrissey has heard my voice. I guess you never know who's listening.

How fun! Today is our 11th wedding anniversary and it's on a Saturday this year :-) I still remember it like it was yesterday. Oh, and I still think Jason is the best groom on the planet. We had the most wonderful wedding! Jason, if you're reading this...remember, it's all about the cake. hahaha No, but for real, that cake was good.

Well, what did we learn this week?

*That Matthew McConaughay makes "Beef It's What's For Dinner" sexy. Although, I still like Sam Elliot's voice. (How does he lose that gig?)

*That there are cereal resturants,

*and there should be more three day weekends.

*Superman doesn't have blonde hair, and if he shows up at your 5th birthday party with blonde hair- you can't fool a 5 year old.

*That women can hear higher frequencies than men and the mp3 was never designed to be so compressed.

*Oh, and out of the top 10 beaches for 2010, we don't live nearly as close as I wish.

*Also, people lie.

*Leia is still terrified of thunderstorms,

*lightbulbs burn brightest just before they break,

*and homemade gelato should be served right after it's done mixing.
